Combos Sweet and Salty!

I'm calling it now. 2015 will be a great year for my fellow junk foodies. I'm sure you're asking, "But Chris, how could you say that when it's still January?".  And I would tell you, "My point exactly". It's only January, and already Combos has thrown down the snack food gauntlet.

Combos, you and I have a long history together. Ever since I first discovered you back in the late 80's, you've been one of my favorite crunchy snacks. I didn't go looking for Combos that day, but I felt like I wanted to try something other than the usual Pringles or Ritz crackers. Then I saw a bag of little pretzel tubes, filled with cheddar cheese. I snatched them off the shelf, grabbed a comic book off the rack, and then tracked down my mom, begging her to buy it all. To say I enjoyed that first bag of Combos would be an understatement. I'm certain I ate the whole bag the same night I got them. They were my favorite weekend snacks. I feel like most of my Combo memories involve me laying on my bed with the TV on and comics spread out all around me. I'd have a bag of Combos by my side, with a large glass of soda on the side table. How I don't weigh 300 lbs I'll never know. You're allowed to hate me for it though.

So far, all of Combos flavors have involved salty pretzels or crackers filled with saltier sauces. As far as I know, the is the first time they saw fit to combine sweet and salty flavors. How about I get this over with before I have to go buy another two bags of these things. The people at Royal Farms are starting to give me some strange looks.

Caramel Creme Pretzel Combos

I'm going to have to be honest, I'm not a big fan of caramel. Sure, I like it in my candy bars, and I'm the first to jump on a half melted Caramello, but as far as individually wrapped caramel candies, they're all yours. Okay, except for those creme filled candies from Goetze's. Don't touch my Goetze's.

Oddly enough, I think that's what Combos was going for with this flavor. I'm not sure if anyone else has had the Goetze candies, but they're pieces of caramel with a sweet cream center. They're the Combos of caramel candies. Well, the creme filling in this Sweet and Salty variety tastes like the Goetze's candies blended up and shoved into a crisp pretzel tube. It's a nice mix of caramel and powdered sugar, and it really works with the pretzel covering.

Vanilla Frosting Pretzel Combos

I think this is my favorite out of the Sweet and Salty flavors. I didn't mention it before, but one of my favorite things about Combos is that the outer covering never changes. The pretzel covering filled with pepperoni tastes exactly the same as the pretzel covering the cheddar cheese. It's the same thing with the sweet creme filled Combos. It's the exact same pretzel shell as all the others. Why did I mention this? I don't know. I guess I just like consistency.

I'm more inclined to call this Vanilla Cream (or Creme) than Vanilla Frosting. The flavor is nearly identical to the creme filling in Lance's Van-O-Lunch cookies but just a bit sweeter. I did find that the vanilla is nearly overpowered by the saltiness of the pretzel, so it's better to savor these than to scarf them down in one bite. I know I can't be the only one that makes a game out of eating these, by trying to remove the outer layer of the pretzel without breaking the Combo into pieces. It's the best way to ensure maximum potential for sweetness, while still enjoying the salty. It also helps stretch the bag a little further as well.

If you're a fan of something-covered pretzels, but think they're too sweet, I urge you to give these a try. They're cheap, so go ahead and buy a bag of each, and don't forget to share with your friends.

Also, if we all buy enough of these, I bet we'll see Chocolate Creme filling by March.

    1. You know, I have to admit that I can't remember ever seeing a Combos commercial. I remember magazine ads, but that's just about it. Off to Youtube I go!
